Tsitsi Dangarembga is one of Africa's most important writers, playwrights and filmmakers. She has been an activist for feminist causes and political change for many years. Her works deal with the clash of traditions and modernity, women's rights and freedom, and the hope for a dignified life and female self-determination. Her 1988 debut novel Nervous Conditions was included by the BBC in its list of the 100 most important books that have shaped the world. Nervous Conditions is the first of an autobiographical trilogy, which she completed with The Book of Not (2006) and This Mournable Body (2020).

Tsitsi Dangarembga (born 1959 in Zimbabwe) studied psychology in Zimbabwe and film directing at the German Film and Television Academy. She is the founder and director of the International Images Film Festival for Women in Harare. Her feature films and documentaries are among Zimbabwe's most popular. The author has received numerous awards for her diverse work, most recently the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade 2021.
