Jozia

Brave New Voices

8.07.2017
Start: 21:00
Old Botanical Garden

The multi-talented singer/songwriter from South Africa presents her magnificent debut album Mamokebe.

The warm, multi-faceted voice of the 24-year-old music poet Jozia from Johannesburg alone is impressive. Her greatest asset, however, is her songwriting: she blithely mixes genres such as folk, soul, pop and indie rock and creates something very unique. The lyrics revolve around the big themes of life: love and alienation, marriage and cows, puberty and identity, marijuana and democracy, music and mother-daughter relationships. Even if we don't understand the words - Jozia sings in Sepedi, Zulu, Xsosa, Xevanda and English - the songs unfold with their intensity and emotionality a magic we can't escape.

Poetry of Pop

Writing good songs is a fine art - Bob Dylan received the Nobel Prize in Literature for it. To mark the occasion, the new series is dedicated to the poetry of the pop song - with concerts by the most talented songwriters and music poets from Switzerland and abroad.
